Timeline at a Glance
- 1607 ‐ Virginia Colony founded; Anglican Church established as only legal religion
- 1739 ‐ George Whitefield preaches in Williamsburg
- 1740s ‐ Samuel Morris begins secret Bible readings
- 1743 ‐ Four "“reading houses” officially licensed (including Polegreen)
- 1747 ‐ Samuel Davies arrives as first non-Anglican minister
- 1752 ‐ Davies' hymns published in Williamsburg
- 1759 ‐ Davies leaves Virginia
- 1775-1783 - American Revolution
- 1862 ‐ Church documented in Lieutenant Farrell's sketches
- 1864 ‐ Church destroyed during Civil War
- Today ‐ Legacy continues through education and preservation
